When you ship across a border, the package needs a customs declaration. Sellers often avoid international sales because customs sounds complicated - but the basics are simple, and getting them right prevents delays, fees and lost orders. Here's the plain-English guide.
A customs form tells the destination country what's in the package, its value, and where it came from. Without it, the package can be delayed, returned, or charged incorrectly. For most Etsy orders it's a small label or form attached to the parcel.
Many customs systems ask for an HS code - a standardized number that classifies your product (e.g., ceramics, jewelry, textiles). You don't need to memorize them:
The general rule: the buyer pays import duties and taxes at delivery, unless the seller uses a program that collects them upfront. Etsy handles this in many cases:
Brexit changed rules - declarations matter, and VAT is often collected at checkout via Etsy. Keep your Etsy tax settings current.
No physical customs - but digital goods may face VAT rules. See digital downloads guide.
Etsy generates and prints the necessary forms for eligible international orders. You attach them to the package.
Use a free HS code finder or Etsy's suggestion. A reasonable category is far better than leaving it blank.
The buyer. Duties and taxes are collected at checkout (where supported) or on delivery by the carrier. Communicate this clearly.
Customs is a label, a value and a description done honestly. Get those three right and international shipping stops being scary.
