Etsy Payment Processing Fees: The 3% + $0.25 You Pay on Every Sale

August 26, 2026 · Etsy-Calc.com

The second fee on every order: 3% + $0.25

Most sellers know about the 6.5% transaction fee, but Etsy also charges a payment processing fee of 3% + $0.25 on every order. It's charged on the full amount the buyer pays - item, shipping, gift wrap, everything. Here's exactly how it works and how to price for it.

What the payment processing fee is

This is the fee Etsy charges to process the buyer's payment - the card network fees, PayPal fees, fraud protection and the payment infrastructure. Etsy bundles it all into one simple rate:

What it's charged on

The real impact in dollars

On a $45 order (item + shipping):

Order totalProcessing fee (3% + $0.25)
$20$0.85 (4.25%)
$45$1.60 (3.6%)
$100$3.25 (3.25%)

Notice the pattern: on small orders the $0.25 fixed fee makes the percentage much higher. A $5 digital printable costs $0.40 to process - that's 8% before the transaction fee.

Why the fixed $0.25 matters

The $0.25 is a flat charge, so it hits cheap items disproportionately hard. Two $10 products processed separately cost $0.85 total. One $20 product costs $0.85 too - same total. But if you sell ten $2 items, each pays 3% + $0.25 = $0.31, which is 15.5% of the price. That's why digital sellers price printables at $5+ and why bundling makes sense.

Payment processing + transaction fee = the real "Etsy cut"

Put the two together and the math on a $45 order:

Before listing renewals, before Offsite Ads, before your own costs - Etsy is already taking 10%. That's the number to price against.

Is the processing fee avoidable?

No. Etsy processes all payments through its own system (Etsy Payments). Whether the buyer pays by credit card, PayPal, Apple Pay or a gift card, you pay the same processing rate. There's no alternative checkout on Etsy.

Refunds and the processing fee

If you refund a buyer, Etsy refunds the fee too in most cases - you're not double-charged for processing. However, you don't get back the time and materials you already spent on the order. Returns still cost you.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Etsy payment processing fee the same for everyone?

The 3% + $0.25 applies to US sellers. Rates can vary by country and currency - check Etsy's fee page for your region.

Does Etsy charge a processing fee on digital downloads?

Yes - it's charged on the full digital order total too. On a $10 download that's $0.55 (3% + $0.25).

Can I use my own payment processor on Etsy?

No. Etsy requires all payments go through Etsy Payments. You can't use Stripe or PayPal directly for Etsy orders.

Add 3% + $0.25 to the 6.5% and Etsy takes about 10% before anything else. On cheap items the fixed fee bites hardest - price accordingly.
