Most Etsy sellers can quote their price but not their profit. They add up sales, subtract "stuff," and hope. That's how shops run for a year and discover they've barely made money. Here's how to calculate your real Etsy profit margin - and what a healthy one looks like.
Profit margin is the percentage of your selling price you actually keep after all costs and fees.
Margin = (revenue - all costs) ÷ revenue
For Etsy, "all costs" means a lot:
The total the buyer pays (item + shipping).
Use our Etsy fee calculator to get the exact fee stack (6.5% + 3% + $0.25 + listing + ads).
Materials + labor + packaging for that item.
Postage + shipping materials (if not already counted).
That's your per-order margin.
A $28 item, $5 shipping charged, real shipping $6, materials $6, labor $8:
| Line | Amount |
| Revenue (buyer pays) | $33 |
| Etsy fees (~10%) | -$3.40 |
| Materials | -$6 |
| Labor | -$8 |
| Shipping (net -$1) | -$1 |
| Net profit | $14.60 (44%) |
| Margin | Rating |
| Under 20% | Too thin - reprice or cut costs |
| 20-30% | Acceptable for high volume |
| 30-50% | Healthy - the sweet spot |
Above 50% is excellent (common for digital products). Under 20%, you're effectively working for your expenses.
30-50% after all fees and costs. Under 20% is too thin for most shops.
It should. Your labor is your biggest cost, and ignoring it makes any shop look profitable when it isn't.
Quarterly at minimum, and whenever prices, costs or fees change. A 30-minute review can reveal big leaks.
Profit margin is the truth your revenue hides. Count every cost - fees, shipping, packaging and your time - and you'll know what you're really earning.
