Etsy offers two ad programs: Promoted Listings (Etsy Ads), which you pay per click, and Offsite Ads, which you pay per sale. They work differently, cost differently, and the smart strategy uses them differently. Here's the full breakdown.
You bid to show your listings in Etsy search results and related places. You pay only when someone clicks.
Etsy promotes your products on Google, Facebook, Instagram and other sites. You pay a commission only when a sale happens.
| Feature | Promoted Listings | Offsite Ads |
| Payment trigger | Per click | Per sale |
| Cost | Your daily budget | 12-15% of sale |
| Control | Full control | Little control |
| Risk | Spend without sales | High fee on sales |
| Best for | Testing and scaling | New shops / exposure |
Begin with a small daily budget ($3-5) on Promoted Listings for your best listings only - the ones with strong photos and reviews. Don't promote everything at once.
Run the numbers through our Etsy fee calculator. If a $25 product nets you $10 organically, a 15% Offsite Ads sale drops it to $6.25 - still profit, but thin. Know your minimum viable price for each ad type.
Check your Promoted Listings stats weekly:
Most successful sellers use ads as a boost, not a foundation:
Start at $3-5/day on your best few listings. Scale up only for listings that convert profitably. Never let ad spend outpace your margin.
For established shops with good listings, yes - they're the fastest growth lever. For weak listings, they waste money. Fix the listing first.
Under $10,000/year you can opt out. Above it, they're mandatory at 12%.
Promoted Listings cost per click; Offsite Ads cost per sale. Budget small, track weekly, and only advertise listings that already convert.
