Etsy Keyword Research: Find the Words Your Buyers Actually Type

August 29, 2026 · Etsy-Calc.com

Great Etsy listings start with great keywords - not great products

You can make the best product in your niche, but if buyers never search the words you used, nobody finds it. Etsy keyword research is the process of discovering the exact phrases shoppers type, then matching your titles and tags to them.

This guide shows you a practical, free-ish method to find Etsy keywords - using Etsy itself and a few tools - so your listings actually get found.

Why keyword research matters on Etsy

Etsy search matches buyer queries against your title, tags, categories and attributes. Two identical products can get wildly different traffic purely based on keyword choice. Keywords are the difference between 10 impressions a month and 10,000.

Method 1: Etsy autocomplete (free, instant)

Etsy's search box reveals real buyer searches as you type. Open Etsy.com and type your main topic:

  1. Type "personalized" → see "personalized gifts," "personalized ornaments," "personalized necklace"
  2. Type "wedding" → "wedding signs," "wedding favors," "wedding guest book"
  3. Note the multi-word phrases - these are long-tail keywords with real demand

Do this for every seed word in your niche and collect 50-100 phrases. This alone is enough to start.

Method 2: Study top-ranking competitor listings

Search your main keyword, then open the first 5-10 listings that rank:

Method 3: Etsy keyword tools (paid but worth it)

Dedicated tools give you search volume, competition scores and tag suggestions:

If you sell regularly, one of these pays for itself. They also track your listings' rankings over time.

How to choose the right keywords

Balance volume and competition

A keyword with huge search volume but 10,000 competing listings is hard to rank for as a new shop. A medium keyword with fewer competitors can be far more profitable.

Mix head terms and long-tail

Use long-tail keywords to win your first rankings, then add head terms as your shop builds authority.

Turn keywords into listings

Title

Lead with your best keyword, then add supporting phrases. See our full guide: Etsy listing title best practices.

Tags

Use all 13 tags (20 characters each). No repeats. Fill with researched phrases. See Etsy SEO: tags and keywords.

Attributes and categories

Complete them fully - they're additional relevance signals for Etsy search.

Track and refine

Etsy Stats shows the search terms buyers used to find your listings. Every few weeks:

  1. Check which terms brought impressions - double down on winners
  2. Find high-impression/low-click listings and rewrite titles
  3. Replace underperforming tags with new research

Frequently asked questions

How many keywords should I target per listing?

One strong primary keyword plus 10-13 supporting long-tail phrases. Your 13 tags each hold a phrase, so plan 10-14 keywords per listing.

Are Etsy keyword tools worth it?

Yes if you sell regularly - they save hours and reveal data Etsy hides. eRank, EverBee and Alura are popular choices.

How often should I redo keyword research?

At least quarterly, and always before a seasonal push. Your stats page tells you when keywords stop working.

Keyword research is the difference between a listing that gets found and one that's invisible. Use Etsy's autocomplete, study rankings, and track your stats.
