Etsy Listing Title Tips: 8 Rules That Lift Clicks

August 23, 2026 · Etsy-Calc.com

The title is 40% of your Etsy SEO

When a buyer searches on Etsy, your listing title is matched against their query word-for-word. It's the single most important SEO element of a listing - more than tags, categories or attributes. Yet most sellers waste it. Here are the 8 rules for Etsy titles that rank and convert.

Rule 1: Lead with your most important keyword

Etsy weights the words at the start of your title highest. Put your primary search term first.

Weak: "Beautiful Handmade Gift Idea - A Perfect Present for Her"
Strong: "Personalized Leather Keychain - Engraved Gift for Her"

Rule 2: Use the full character limit

Use the entire title length Etsy allows (check your dashboard for the current limit - it has grown over the years). Longer titles let you cover more relevant keywords and phrases.

Rule 3: Front-load buyer words, not your brand

Buyers search "candle," not "LuxCo Handmade Studio." Your shop name belongs in your branding, not the first words of your title. Put keywords first, brand later (if at all).

Rule 4: Mix head terms and long-tail phrases

A title built entirely of one-word keywords looks like stuffing. Instead, combine a broad head term with specific long-tail phrases:

"Hand-Poured Soy Candle | Lavender & Eucalyptus | 40 Hour Clean Burn | Gift for Her" - covers broad (candle) and specific (lavender, gift for her) searches.

Rule 5: Include who it's for and when they'd buy it

Buyer-intent words boost relevancy for common searches:

These phrases match real searches and signal intent.

Rule 6: Avoid keyword stuffing and repetition

"Candle, Soy Candle, Scented Candle, Best Candle" is repetitive and Etsy sees it as lower quality. Each word should add new meaning. Also, don't repeat the same phrase in a tag - it counts once.

Rule 7: Write for humans, rank for machines

A title like "Personalized Gift, Custom Keychain, Engraved Leather, Anniversary Present" is stuffed. Instead: "Personalized Leather Keychain with Engraved Initials - Anniversary Gift for Him." It reads naturally and still targets the same searches.

Rule 8: Use your title to sell, not just describe

Titles also appear in search results and on the listing page. A compelling title earns the click:

Before and after example

Before: "Custom Made Gift for Birthday, Personalized Present for Her, Anniversary Gift for Woman, Engraved Jewelry"

After: "Personalized Necklace with Initial - Engraved Gift for Her, Birthday or Anniversary"

The second targets the same searches but reads cleanly and leads with the strongest keyword.

Frequently asked questions

How long can an Etsy title be?

Etsy has expanded title limits over time (140 characters has been the standard for years - check your dashboard for the current cap). Longer titles are fine and usually help.

Does repeating keywords in tags help?

No. A phrase that appears in both title and tags only counts once. Use each tag for a new phrase.

Should I put my brand name in the title?

Only at the very end, and only if you have spare characters. Buyers don't search for your brand before they know you.

Your title is keyword real estate. Lead with the strongest phrase, cover who and when, and write it so a human wants to click.
