Every Etsy seller has priced something, made a sale, and then been surprised at how little was left. The fix is simple: run the numbers through an Etsy fee calculator before you list, not after you sell. This guide shows you exactly how to use one - including our free Etsy fee & profit calculator - to set prices you're confident in.
It works backwards from your inputs to show you the bottom line:
On our calculator, plug in the price and shipping, toggle offsite ads on/off, and read the real profit line instantly. No formulas, no math mistakes.
A healthy net margin is 30-50%. If your margin is under 20%, the price is too low or your costs are too high. Raise the price and re-check until you hit your target.
Test different prices side by side. A $4 price increase might double your per-order profit - the calculator shows you exactly where the sweet spot is.
You're considering a $24 item, $5 shipping charged, $4 shipping cost, $8 item cost:
| Scenario | Gross | Etsy fees | Net profit |
| $24, organic | $29 | $3.00 | $6.00 (21%) |
| $24, 15% ad | $29 | $7.35 | $1.65 (6%) |
| $28, organic | $33 | $3.39 | $9.61 (29%) |
Notice two things: the ad-sourced sale nearly wipes out profit, and a $4 price raise nearly doubles profit. Without a calculator, you'd never see either.
Many calculators (including ours) let you work backwards: enter your costs and a target margin, and it tells you the exact price to charge. This is the fastest way to stop underpricing:
Good ones use the current published fees (6.5% transaction, 3% + $0.25 processing, $0.20 listing, 12-15% offsite ads). Always confirm the exact rates for your country on Etsy's fee page.
It should - and ours does, because Etsy charges fees on the shipping total. That's where sellers lose the most money.
30-50% after all fees and costs. Under 20% and you're effectively working for your costs.
Price with a calculator, not a feeling. Two minutes at etsy-calc.com shows your real net profit before you commit - and usually reveals you can charge more.
